Applied Behavior Analysis Explained

ABA is not a set of interventions, but a scientific problem-solving approach. The goal is to identify factors that impact behavior and then adjust these factors to improve quality of life for individuals, families, and communities. A wide range of interventions have been developed within the field. New interventions continue to be developed and old ones are revised as our understanding of how behavior works expands and improves.

EVIDENCE-BASED

ABA therapy draws on well-established and ongoing research regarding behavioral principles, processes and effective teaching procedures.

PERSONALIZED

Teaching goals and procedures are crafted based on each child’s unique abilities and needs. Treatment plans are written based on the results of individual assessments, careful observation, and thoughtful questions and discussions with a child and key caregivers.

QUANTIFIABLE PROGRESS

Progress is carefully measured and monitored. If a specific protocol is not working for a child, the protocol is adjusted.

Who can benefit from ABA?

Because ABA is the application of the science of behavior, anyone who is interested in transforming their behavior or learning new skills can benefit from ABA interventions. Behavior analysts work in many fields including health and fitness, substance abuse, workplace safety, gerontology, education and healthcare. At this time, ABA is considered the “gold standard” for autism treatment.
